Yukon territory Goal fever!

We left whitehorse this am at about 11:15 headed toward Haines Junction. In a northwestern direction.
We decided to go through Haines Jct. and not all the way up to Dawson City. Randy is ready to get this driving over ,as itis not relaxing for him.
I can not blame him, although I have mixed emotions, we have planned this trip for almost 3 yrs and now we are getting close to the end.
It makes me sad to think of this ,but then I remember, no the adventure is only just begining!
The drive was only the very starting we have such a lot to see and do in Alaska, and I want to do it all! If you know me, you know this is my. Mentally, go big or go home, as they say.
We can,at a later date when we are not pulling this big camper go through Dawson City and on Top of The World highway.
Another trip I would like to make is to go through Fairbanks and on to prudoue Bay and Deadhorse, to see the tundra and all the wildlife. These will most likely be stories to come.
Right now we plan on getting into Alaska, and taking the ferry on the inside passage to see all the small towns inaccessible by car. Another story to come.
As I think of these things I begin to get excited and ready to get there!
I know regular life will set in and we will again have the daily grind, but I want to have goals so life does not slip away. I want to dream like I will live forever and live like I will dye tomorrow, as the saying goes.

This becomes more important to me the older I get, as well as the pleasure of spending time with my husband and doing things together while we both are able.

In my line of work as an ICU RN I see people’s lives as well as there families lives.

As we travel northwest we have no stopping point in mind we will just see how far we get today

The  Ruby and Nisling mountain ranges are to our right, we can begin to see the dynamic Klune mountain range rising above the horizon. Some peaks rising greater then 17,000 feet.

image

The snow capped peaks, are a mix of snow and icefields.
We go by a sign that says” now leavinvg 911 services” as well as we do not have any cell service, nor have we for most of our journey in the wilderness. Therefore you still see a lot of  pay phones’ however I am not sure who you would call.
We are now on our own from now on till we get to haines junction, and again after passing through Haines Junction, many times not meeting another vehicle for maney miles.

The klune national park icefields are Canada’s highest and the worlds largest nonpolar alpine icefield.
Mt Kennedy and Mt. Hubbard are 2 of the tallest and are seen before the whole range is in site.

We reach Haines junction around 1pm. Randy decides to stop for a bamberger (YES ERIK another hamberger), and I set up for a coffee break, that my loving husband has made sure to pack for me.

image

I make a thermas of cowboy coffee and we are on our way.
On our way from Haines junction we get a glimps of the Kaskawulsh glacier.

image

Traveling on we go through country that looks as though a grizzly bear or moose could step out of. Sadly, we only saw another bunch of wild horess I did not get  picure of them or of the  moose my husband saw.

image

The road is now broken pavement covered with sand we can only go about 5 to 20 miles per hour in most places. When you see an orange flag at the side of the road or this sign you really need to slow down becauce it is going to be rough.

image

We pass by a small village of 55 people named Burwash Landing.
They have a museum there, see picture.

This is th bilboard advertising their museum.

image

We then come to Klune lake. On the other side of the Klune mountains lie the Baldeak mountains And many large glacier field.

( I had trouble with the headings on my pictures the 2 upper are the scarey places, as if you coildnt tell.LOL.

I love the sign on the host cabins door that reads, ” if you are being chased by a bear do not run in here!”)

This is home for the night.
Erik you will be happy to know we had fresh trout grilled on the barbeque, and not hambergers  . With roasted potatos, and roasted beets both roasted on the coals.
Yum!
May 13th

Left camp at about 1030. Headed toward Beaver creek. This is where the u.s. boarder crossing is.. Randy and I were discussing if we bought anything in Canada other then diesel and food, we both agreed we had not. As you can not bring certain purchased items over the border.
We both agreed it should be a measure offence to bring cheese over the border. As the cheese in canada is terrible.
It is all soft like velveta, and is more like cheese product then real cheese. Even if you get aged chedder it is all the same. UgH!
As we are driving the road we come to a new rough road sign, we had not seen before. This one looks like it means business.
2 large orange reflector pools with strips, I think we had better slow down, we are going 20 mph LOL.
This signifies a frost heave that is unrepaird it is the mother of all rough road signs.
We stop at Buckshot Betty:s for lunch. It is a quint little resteraunt along with guft shop.
We reach the boarder a few miles west of beaver lodge, before getting to us customs we are stopped by a mounty and our licence are checked. I guess they lnew

  1. Teresa and I love followings your adventures! I think I one time count 16 one way trips up and down the Alcan over the years. Anyway welcome “home” to Alaska. Where will you be working? Did I tell you Dan & Brenda Schmidt will be here in June? Daryl and Dori Hollingsworth live up here too so we can have a Kansas reunion.
